This Mt. Amnye Machen halfway trek offers the best trekking experience in eastern Amdo. It is the most famous pilgrimage route and best trekking adventure tour in the very region. It covers an area size of 660 acres and 13 peaks, the highest of which rises over 6082m above sea level. The fifth Dalai Lama called it the Ever-white Peak. We would recommend this trek from May to December.

The Mount Amnye Machen trek offers the best trekking experience in eastern Amdo, the Tibetan area in Qinghai Province. This sacred mountain is worshipped by Buddhists as well as followers of Bon, Tibet’s pre-Buddhist religion. It is the most famous pilgrimage route in Amdo. A halfway circumambulation around Amnye Machen takes 6-7 days. This route takes you to it’s southern face, which has an absolutely gorgeous and untouched landscape.

The local mountain god, Amnye Machen, is one of the most famous of Amdo, or Do-med, which encompasses over one third of the Tibetan plateau. Mt. Amnye Machen is the most sacred mountain on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. It has a total area of 660 acres and 13 peaks, of which the highest peak rises over 6082m above sea level. The fifth Dalai Lama called it the Ever-white Peak. The rest of the peaks rise above 4900 meters and are snow capped throughout the year. Day 1: Heading to Chabcha via Lake Kokonor Chabcha

  • Altitude: 3200m
  • Distance: 215km
  • Time: ≈ 5hours
  • Overnight: Hotel in Chabcha town

In the morning drive to Lake Kokonor (Chinese: Qinghai Hu), the largest salt water lake in China and a sacred, historic place for Tibetans. Exploring the lake is a good chance to experience the diversity of nature and the changes occurring in the environment of the Tibetan Plateau. Interact with locals and feel free to ask questions, your translator will assist you! After that, we will drive to Chabcha town.

Day 2: Heading to Tsarnak

  • Highest Altitude: 4499m
  • Distance: 360km
  • Time taking: ≈ 6hours
  • Overnight: Camp near a local nomad home

Drive to Tsarnak via the highway to the northern par of Mt. Amnye Machen. Tsarnak is the start point of our trek. We will camp near a local Tibetan nomad home and you will have time to prepare.

Day 3: Trek Halong Langri-Chu

  • Highest Altitude: 4700m
  • Distance: 24km
  • Time taking: ≈ 8 hours
  • Overnight: Camp

Trek and cross the highest pass of Mt. Amnye Machen. Tamchok Gongkar Pass is 4700 meters with an amazing view of the holy mountain. Camp at Langri-chu.

Day 4: Trek to Mowatowa Rocky Valley

  • Highest Altitude: 4300m
  • Distance: 20km
  • Time taking: ≈ 7 hours
  • Overnight: Camp

Trek to the rock valley nearby Mowathowa. The landscape is something else, especially when it snows.

Day 5: Trek to Goku Thang Valley

  • Average Altitude: 4300m
  • Distance: 25km
  • Time taking: ≈ 8 hours
  • Overnight: Camp

Today, we will reach the most unique spots on our Amnye Machen halfway trek. We will visit the meditation caves and the cliffs of Goku Thang Valley, which are said to mark the entrance to the palace of the mountain’s protector deity, Machen Bomra (another name for Mount Amnye Machen)

Day 6: Trek to Jomolangra

  • Highest Altitude: 4300m
  • Distance: 14km. Amnye Machen Trek
  • Time taking: ≈ 6 hours
  • Overnight: Guesthouse

Trek down through the Chushen River Gorge and meet our driver after crossing through the Jomolangra Valley. Our Amnye Machen trek is officially ends here. You can also trek down to Lower Tawu if you wish. Overnight in guesthouse at Lower Tawu.

Day 7: Drive Back to Xining

Drive back to Xining and transfer to your hotel.
